Rift Valley fever
An acute viral zoonotic disease that primarily affects animals but can also infect humans.
Symptoms
Sudden fever, muscle pain and headache; severe forms may cause encephalitis, jaundice and haemorrhagic signs (bloody vomiting or bleeding under the skin), and eye congestion with deteriorating vision up to loss of sight.
Incubation period
2 to 6 days.
Prevention
No vaccination; observe personal protection against mosquito bites and avoid contact with infected animals. Use repellents, sleep under nets, and wear long sleeves and trousers.
