Nipah virus
An emerging zoonotic disease causing severe illness in animals and humans; transmitted to humans from animals (such as bats or pigs) or contaminated food, and can spread directly from person to person.
Symptoms
Influenza-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting and sore throat, which may be followed by dizziness, drowsiness, altered mental state and acute encephalitis; severe cases can progress to coma within 24 to 48 hours.
Incubation period
4 to 14 days (may extend up to 45 days).
Prevention
No vaccination; avoid contact with sick animals and contaminated food, and observe personal hygiene.
